The main character (Giana) sprite doesn’t look quite right to me. Her head is directed to the side while the body is seen from the front. Kind of unnatural/uncomfortable position if you ask me. Does she walk sideways? Maybe the body can be angled a bit.
Your efforts are appreciated. Hope the game plays as good as it looks.

Look at the Mario games. Mario stays to the front, too. I think, this is the best position when you stand.

Only in the very first SMB (NES). In SMB 2+3 they changed the position to the side.

I just had a look at the original Giana Sisters, and you’re right about the style used in the game. Oh well, use whatever you prefer I guess.
